HUGHES
Robert Gary Hughes, 88, of Johnstown passed away on November 25, 2025. He was born on October 28, 1937, in Ord, Nebraska, to Robert C. and Donna (Burrows) Hughes. Raised alongside his sister and three brothers, Robert graduated from Ord High School in 1956 before enlisting in the United States Navy, where he proudly served until October 1962.
On May 22, 1965, Robert married Ann Cornelison. Together they shared 60 wonderful years and raised
their two children, Jodi and Damon. A dedicated and hardworking iron worker, Robert was a proud
member of the Iron Workers Union and built a career defined by strength, skill, and integrity.
After retiring, Robert found great joy in his workshop, crafting beautiful birdhouses and spending time
with the tools and projects he loved. He was an avid reader and cherished his weekly visits and
conversations with friends at the Johnstown Library. A passionate sports fan, Robert rarely missed a
Broncos or Rockies game and remained devoted to all things Nebraska, always eager to talk about his
home state. Above all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. They were his pride and joy.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Robert C. and Donna Hughes; his son, Damon Hughes; and his youngest brother, John Hughes.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Hughes; his daughter, Jodi (Jerry) Black; his sister, Kay Fanning; his
brothers, Lan Hughes and Leslie Hughes; his grandsons, Jameson Sherwood, Kyle Sherwood, and Jacob
Black; his honorary daughter, Kelly Wildeman Hughes; his dear friend, Sam Gunter; and many beloved
nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 7 at 2 p.m. at Stoddard Funeral Home. In honor of
Robert’s love of sports, the family invites guests to wear their favorite sports jersey.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
