Around Town

Around Town
The Johnstown/Milliken Kappa chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a women’s international educator organization, was delighted to recently award a $100 grant-in-aid to eight brand new teachers in the district. The money can be used for anything that will help these teachers in their classroom. Shown here are four of the teachers at Roosevelt Middle School: (left to right) Robin Denman and Denise Herman, DKG members, Riney Arnold, Jennifer Silva, Fey Brundige, Halle Meister, and Cheryl Primmer, DKG member. What looked like an ordinary pile of old bricks is actually a piece of Milliken’s past. During excavation and leveling at the northwest corner of Broad Street and Irene Avenue, a fascinating historical discovery was uncovered: LOTS and LOTS of bricks, along with three large stones and a few bits of memorabilia. Thanks to the Town of Milliken and the Milliken Historical Society, these pieces of the past were carefully preserved and will be displayed at the Glenn A. Jones Library in Johnstown during the month of October.

The display tells part of the story of the buildings that once stood on that very piece of land. It will eventually find a permanent home at the Heritage House Museum, but for now, you can stop by and get a glimpse of this little piece of Milliken history.
