The Persian Pickel Piecers, a local quilt group, came together recently for their monthly sew day. This gathering was special because, unlike their typical sessions, every member brought and used a Singer Featherweight sewing machine. These beloved machines, known for their lightness and portability, date back to the 1930s and carry a rich history that adds character to each project. The quilters present at this unique sew day included (pictured left to right): Brittany Kammerzell, Pat Blatzer, Anita Doane, Terri Miller, Shirley Freienmuth, Connie Sabatka, Mary Janes, Geri Sue Coe, and Nanette Fornof. Their shared passion for quilting and appreciation for classic sewing machines made the day both enjoyable and memorable, they say. Got a picture for Page 3? An item for Around Town? With spring coming it’s time to give your lawn and garden some love, and the Town of Johnstown wants to help. The town is offering a Residential Lawn Replacement Program. By replacing water-thirsty lawns with sustainable, low-water landscapes, residents can receive a rebate up to $2 per square foot – saving up to $2,000 per water account per year.

Project designs must be approved by town staff prior to starting the work. The town has also partnered with Resource Central to offer low-water perennial garden kits. These kits are easy to install and can help you save around 7,300 gallons of water over the garden’s lifetime compared to a traditional grass lawn. You can even get $25 off your kit.
