Gloria L. Velásquez is a nationally published author, an early pioneer of the Chicano literary resistance movement and first began professionally writing and publishing during the Chicano Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and 70s. Her journey into writing started with humble roots in Johnstown at Roosevelt High School.
Velásquez credited her time in high school for fostering her love of writing. She graduated from Roosevelt in 1967.
