Gas line fire still under investigation

JOHNSTOWN – Investigators from Front Range Fire Rescue, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control and Xcel Energy are still trying to determine why a gas line along Colorado Highway 60 exploded last week, sending flames hundreds of feet into the air and five people to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A private contracting crew was working on the line near Meadowlark Drive in the Mallard Ridge subdivision July 24. Front Range Fire Rescue had posted on its Facebook page that morning that residents might smell gas – a natural occurrence sometimes when work is being done.
