Roosevelt High School’s art department brought a fiery twist to student creativity this spring with its second annual Raku pottery event, held April 22–23 during school hours. Led by art teachers Jerry Martin and Alison Wilcox, the event partnered students with professional ceramic artists to explore an ancient Japanese glazing technique that they are unable to practice in the classroom.
“These processes aren’t something that we can typically do in our classroom setting and I wanted to give kids a unique experience to get some awesome results with Raku,” Martin said. “This is an event that teachers and students look forward to every year and we hope to continue to keep this going annually.”
